US Ports of Entry – their Immigration Records and Passenger Lists – A Genealogy Guide by Joe Beine

Below is a list of many United States sea ports and land border ports that have published immigration records (passenger arrival lists) 1820-1957, organized by state. Included are Canadian border crossing records, which are listed under each border state, with further information in a separate section near the end of this webpage. Mexican border crossing records are also listed here for California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The rest are for ship passenger arrival records (and a select few for airplane passenger lists). Some crew lists, a few passenger departure records, and some passenger arrivals after 1957, are also included. U.S. Territories are listed following the Wisconsin section below.

Wisconsin
The National Archives does not have ship passenger arrival lists for Milwaukee or any other Wisconsin port. Immigrants who came to Wisconsin generally arrived at a US East coast port or a Canadian port (Quebec was often used) before moving on to Wisconsin.

The National Archives has Crew Lists for the Wisconsin ports listed below. Some Milwaukee airplane passenger lists are also available (see A3399 below). Microfilm publication numbers are given at the beginning of each listing. Some of these are available online at Ancestry (as noted).

Canadian Border Crossing Records

Note: Canadian border crossing records begin in 1895. They are not available prior to that. Although the actual border crossing may have taken place at a variety of places, some of the records produced are called “Saint Albans Lists” because they were kept in St. Albans, Vermont prior to being microfilmed. The St. Albans FAQ and the “By Way of Canada” article are helpful for learning how to research these records.
